Unlocking the Future of Renewable Energy: ARENA’s $143 Million Community Battery Funding Program

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is leading a transformative initiative to bolster Australia’s renewable energy infrastructure. With conditional approval for the rollout of up to 370 community batteries under the first round of its Community Battery Funding program, ARENA is set to revolutionize energy consumption across the nation. This substantial investment, totalling $143 million, promises to unlock an additional $359 million in renewable energy investments.

A Nationwide Impact

This initiative isn’t limited to a specific region; every state and the Northern Territory stand to benefit. The community batteries are anticipated to make a significant difference in local network constraints, enhance rooftop solar capacity, reduce emissions, and, crucially, lower electricity costs for consumers.

The range of beneficiaries is extensive. From households to hospitals, schools, council facilities, social and community housing, and even regional and remote communities, the impact will be far-reaching. Imagine sports facilities, libraries, aquatic centres, shopping centres, and more, all enjoying the benefits of enhanced energy resilience and reduced costs.

The Vision of ARENA

Darren Miller, the Chief Executive Officer of ARENA, emphasized the transformative potential of community batteries. According to Miller, these batteries will not only enhance energy resilience, reliability, and sustainability but also bring down energy costs for both consumers and businesses.

“ARENA is pleased to support the rollout of these batteries through our transformative program which will have a significant impact upon Australia’s energy and grid security while delivering cleaner and more cost-effective energy for our communities. We are encouraged to see this important asset class being demonstrated at such a scale and expect that this funding round will kick start the neighbourhood-scale storage sector,” said Miller.

Federal Support and Future Prospects

The 2022–2023 Federal Budget allocated a substantial $200 million for the Community Batteries for Household Solar Budget Measure, aimed at deploying 400 community batteries across Australia. Out of this, $171 million was designated for ARENA to facilitate the deployment of at least 342 batteries, with the remainder managed by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

The response to the first round of funding has been overwhelming, with 140 eligible Expressions of Interest received. ARENA has conditionally allocated funding to 21 applications from 20 applicants. This includes ten applications requesting $67.3 million under Stream A (Distribution Network Service Providers) and eleven applications requesting $75.7 million under Stream B (Non-DNSPs).

Technical and Financial Insights

The batteries proposed under this initiative will boast an aggregated storage capacity of up to 281MWh, enabling the storage and use of renewable electricity generated across Australian communities. ARENA’s contribution will be up to $0.51/Wh in grant funding against an average cost of $1.28/Wh, covering 39.8% of the expenses.

However, the specific locations for these batteries are still to be finalized. They will be subject to community consultation, planning approvals, and commercial agreements. All ARENA funding is conditional upon finalizing agreements with each successful applicant.

Looking Ahead

The journey doesn’t end here. ARENA is already gearing up for a second round of community battery funding, expected to launch in late 2024. This next round will see at least $28 million allocated to continue this crucial work.

For Australian business owners, this initiative represents a remarkable opportunity. Enhanced energy resilience, reduced costs, and a sustainable future are within reach. Staying informed and engaged with programs like ARENA’s Community Battery Funding can position businesses at the forefront of this energy revolution.
